Statistically Speaking – 2013 Week 01

Statistically Speaking

We’re back!…And on schedule…and…WHERE DID ALL THESE FUCKING POINTS COME FROM?!?!…Holy Crap…5 Player Awards go to 3 Teams…The veteran signal caller literally starts the season in record form…#1 is #1…Someone finally realized this is a PPR league…The Leg leads the way…A team full of Cowboys is better than a team full of Redksins…A Brother’s War…and…lets get started already…

Peyton Manning (MNY)

This just in…Peyton Manning is still an elite Quarterback (But not the best…lest I unleash a tirade from Brady’s personal ball washer…Hunter)…Playing in the Opening Night Thursday game…The Elder Manning hit on 27 of his 42 passes (64.3%) for 462 yards…10 short of his personal best (472 in Week 8 of 2004)…13 of those went for 1st Downs…and the Football on Your Phone evangelist tied the NFL record with 7 passing Touchdowns in 1 game…a record that has not been seen since 6 weeks after Woodstock ended 44 years ago…A 0 in the interceptions column rounded out to a 141.1 passer rating for the contest…which there wasn’t for this award…No other Quarterback came within 2 touchdowns of competing…and the 51 point score was essentially 4x that of the 13 put up by the week’s worst starter (Thanks Cam!)…it is only the 6th 50+ point player output…the 4th highest from any player…and 2nd highest from a Quarterback…Money Inc. claims the 1st Player-of-the-Week trophy of the year…

Adrian Peterson (FUD)

The 2 top scorers for this award went head-2-head in their NFL matchup…Adrian Peterson sent a message to the league that he is serious about his 2500 yard goal this season…taking the 1st handoff 78 yards to pay dirt…but then…only 15 carries for 17 yards…and 0 1st Downs on the ground…At halftime ½ of his runs were for negative yardage (4 carries, -14 yards)…On the other side…someone was out to prove who the real #1 receiver is in Detroit…Reggie Bush matched Calvin Johnson with 4 catches (on 1 less target) for 3x the yardage including a 77 yard Touchdown scamper of his own…He tacked on 90 more yards between the tackles on 20 touches (4.5ypc) including 5 1st Downs…Touchdowns were the decider here as Peterson managed 2 more short scores (1 on the ground, 1 in the air)…while Bush managed to have 2 short Touchdown runs overturned falling 3 points short 29 to 32…Fudgie Whales claims their 1st Player-of-the-Week trophy of the year…

Anquan Boldin (PLA)

Demaryius Thomas took the early lead for this position on Thursday Night…Targeted 11 times by our Quarterback-of-the-Week…Thomas pulled in 5 balls for 161 yards (32.2 ypc) and 2 of the record breaking Touchdowns ending on 33 points…AJ Green was the next to lead the pack…catching 9 of his 13 targets for 162 yards (18.0 ypc) and matching the 2 scores through the air to end on 37 after the early Sunday games…but it would not hold…In his 1st game as a 49er Anquan Boldin showed us the definition of PPR League…He pulled in the most catches for the week (13) on the most targets for the week (17) for the most yards on the week (208)…That is the most yardage the veteran has accumulated since his first NFL game 10 years ago in Week 1 of the 2003 season (217)…It’s also more than the 125 a starting quarterback threw this week (Thanks Cam!)…Boldin added 1 Touchdown to slide past Green to 39 points and Danny’s first Player-of-the-Week trophy of the year…

Greg Zuerlein (FUD)

The Gold Standard for Kickers…Get 5 opportunities from your team…3 Field Goals and 2 Extra Points to reach the Spinal Tap milestone of 11…only 3 players reached it in Week 1…Garret Hartley followed the path first hitting 3 Field Goals and 2 Extra Points scoring 11 against the Falcons…Stephen Gostkowski equaled the mark getting his 3rd Field Goal as time expired to beat the Bills and end on 11…Greg Zuerlein already had 3 Field Goals and 1 Extra Point…but the Rams fell short of the end zone forcing him to use his 5th opportunity on a 4th Field Goal to defeat the Cardinals and end on 13 points…Unfortunately for Fudgie Whales…none of the kicks qualified for distance bonus…resulting in an opening week tie with Runs N Throses…It is the Whales 2nd Player-of-the-Week trophy on the year…

Dallas Cowboys (PLA)

What is it with Danny and Defenses?  Last year he rode the Bears…even through bye weeks…and they ended as the #1 Scoring Defense…a full 8 points per game better than the #12 Scoring Defense…For a 1-of roster position…that’s a better per game average than Drew Brees was over Quarterback #12…But when he could keep double the value for an 11th round pick…he passed (and took Nick Folk at 10 instead?!?)…Apparently the T-Bags are on us…He grabbed the Cowboys defense in Round 17 and picked right up where he left off dominating the position…Eli Manning was sacked 3 times…they used the pressure to snag 3 interceptions including a Pick-6 Touchdown…and then forced David Wilson into a timeout getting 3 fumble recoveries including another 27 yard Touchdown…It is The Legends 2nd Player-of-the-Week award on the season…but not the last award for the week…

Team of the Week

At the end of the 1pm games…yours truly held the top spot at 144 points…(of course with 2 Reggie Bush touchdowns called back and the self-predicted-shoulda-benched-Cam and it coulda|woulda been 161…just saying)…As the 4pm games were winding down the 3rd Quarter…Fitzgerald had a 24 yard touchdown catch and Rodgers sat at 255 yards to bring Hurricanes to 139…Fitz managed to not catch another ball as I nervously watched him miss on 2 more targets…On the Packers next drive Rodgers added 50 more yards bringing Hurricanes to 142…My hopes went up as I watched Kaepernick convert on 4th and 2 with a 15 yard pass to Anquan Boldin to keep the clock running and the Packers offense off the field…and then I cursed at the RedZone channel as Phil Dawson did not run more time off the clock before hitting his 34 yard field goal…With :25 seconds left to play…the Android of course completed his last 38 yard pass of the day bringing Hurricanes into a 144 point tie for the Team-of-the-Week lead…But the day was not over…Playground Legends was only at 98 points going into Sunday Night action with 3 homer players to go…but the team historically accused of forgetting this is a PPR league…managed to find 18 more receptions (well 21 if you count the 3 picks…) plus 180 yards of offense to get in contention…They then rode their Dallas Defense to the title topping out at 160…The output ties as the 14th highest score in a TBFL game…and is a new Team Record for the Legends (138, 2008 Week 12)…Adding Husslers 122 points (tied for 20th most in a loss…) the 282 point combined score is the 6th highest in TBFL history…The 1st Team-of-the-Week award on the year…The 10th earned by Playground Legends…their first since Week 8 of the 2010 Season…

Chump of the Week

Competition for this came down to sibling rivalry…In a week where the NFL set a new record with 65 Touchdown passes and the TBFL set a new Average Score record of 124…Neither X-Factor nor Warriors had more than 1 aerial score from their starting 5 position players…and neither reached even 100 Potential Points…Josh set the bar pretty low at 75 after the Sunday afternoon games…and managed to lower it further when David Wilson had an outbreak of fumbluslotsus in the Sunday Night game ending on 74…The elder Riley had only 36 points with his Redskins roster to play on Monday Night…It took well past halftime before he managed to just climb past his brother ending on 83 for the week…Both teams may need the “This is a PPR League” reminder as Warriors managed only 18 receptions and X-Factor the league low at 11…Fortunately we give everyone a 1 week tune up period so no team was eliminated from the Chump Survivor Pool…but these 2 teams are the early leaders for Week 2…

Notes & Numbers

UO Grandmasters valiant effort on Monday Night to upset pre-season #1 Hurricanes fell 6 points short…139 to 144…139 is now the 2nd most points ever scored in a loss…3 of the top 5 all fell to Hurricanes…

The combined score of 283 just edges out the 282 scored in the game with Husslers and our Team of the Week making it the 5th highest combined total ever…

The tie between Fudgie Whales and Runs N Throses is the 1st scored since Warriors and The Crew battled to an 82-82 finish in Week 5 of 2009…
