Statistically Speaking – With All Dew Respect

Statistically Speaking

Keeping things running along here as the 2014 TBFL Draft is now less than a month away…(August 31 for anyone who may have forgotten that and allowed their wife to schedule a trip to Disney World that day)…While not nearly as detailed a post as our defending champion, there were 2 other takers last season to throw out some predictions of their own…The original posts can be found HERE…but since the MyFantasyLeague Message Board no longer hosts these things indefinitely…they were also preserved HERE…Following the style of our previous BAT-tleship posts…each prediction will be graded…but since my predictions were based on Mountain Dew wagers…they will be scored as either:

  A *HIT*
or
  A *MISS*

Here we go…

From The Commissioner:

1) I will end the season with a winning record…
*HIT*  Winning record (sadly only the 7th time in 16 seasons) and a 4th Twilight Zone Division Championship…(I hope I never see another tie game again)…The Army ended the League’s longest Playoff Win Drought getting their 1st Playoff Win since their 2003 Fantasy Bowl Championship…

2) I will lose Week 1 to Bay Area Thrashers…
*MISS*  I happily rode my Pre-M*A*S*H Unit to a 144-115 win over Thrashers to start my 2013 Season…bringing our Regular Season record back to parity at 6-6…unfortunately…I would never get within 3 Touchdowns of that high score again on the year…and Kevin would have his vengeance posting the highest score in TBFL history (184) to end my 2013 Season…

3) Oakland will not be the #1 Draft Pick in the 2014 NFL Draft…I actually made a Mountain Dew wager with Hunter over this because…
*HIT*  Technically earned before the 2013 NFL season was over when the Texans locked up the worst record…but not Officially earned till the Texans did not trade out to the Raiders…a loophole opportunity I had not considered…

4) The NY Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars will both be worse than the Oakland Raiders…
*MISS*  The Jaguars were my pre-season pick for worst team…although they ended the year with the same 4-12 record as the Raiders…Oakland beat them Head-2-Head in Week 2…The J-E-T-S proved better than expected going 8-8 and beating the Raiders Head-2-Head in Week 14…

5) The Philadelphia Eagles will win 4 Division Games…I made another Mountain Dew bet with Gasper on this one.
*HIT*  It took all the way to Week 17…but Chip Kelly Ball won the NFC East in it’s first year by splitting with the Giants and Cowboys and sweeping the struggling Redskins…both Mountain Dew wagers won…

6) Hurricanes will win the Buccaneer Division…Not a stretch…yeah I know…but…
*HIT*  While actually not as dominant in wins in 2013 vs 2012 (2 Team of the Week awards vs 5)…John piled up a League best 11-2 record and secured the Hurricane’s 4th Buccaneer Division Championship in their 6th TBFL Season…

7) Hurricanes will NOT win the Fantasy Bowl…It’s unexplainable how it has not happened yet…but some how…some way…this streak will continue.
*HIT*  For the 3rd straight season…Hurricanes run ended with a loss to the Bandits Division in the Playoffs…Fudgie Whales delivering the blow this time…

8) Steven Jackson + Vincent Jackson will outscore Larry Fitzgerald + David Wilson on the season…
*HIT*  This one seemed like a bigger deal to me at the beginning of the season…I had these players all projected with similar stats for the year and hoped I gambled right…It was settled pretty early when David Wilson got off to a terrible start before having what proved to be a Career Ending injury in Week 5…

9) Statistically Speaking will not miss a week for the 2013 Season…
*HIT*  Every week delivered…even with Playoff and All-Star content…Thursday games every week probably helped me force through it to deliver before that Week’s Kickoff…

10) Superbowl Prediction – Denver Broncos defeat the San Francisco 49ers…Denver has the easy road to the playoffs through the AFC West and I think they will remain less banged up than New England or anyone else who manages to make it into the postseason from my beloved American Conference. The Niners are just…consistent…they are good but not spectacular at every position…and their defense is stifling.  Ultimately I think Peyton gets a second ring.
*MISS*  But man so close…Denver got there…and San Francisco was a game away from making the Superbowl before losing to the Seahawks…Stifling Defense did prove to be difference maker though as Seattle spanked the Broncos in  Superbowl XLVIII…

That’s it from me – 10 quick picks.

Anyone else going to throw some shit out there to see what sticks before we kickoff?

Commish

One more prediction for Week 1 – I should be starting Alex Smith instead of Cam based on match ups…but I just can’t bring myself to do it…
*HIT*  As detailed in my Week 3 Cam Shafted article…Cam proved to be the Worst Possible Quarterback on my roster in Week 1 with 13 points…Alex Smith managed 18 points…and my Best Possible Quarterback in Sam Bradford was never even on my radar putting up 23 points on the bench…

 8-3 on my 1st time out…probably beginner’s luck…but I enjoyed all the Mountain Dew…

From Husslers:
(All grammatical errors left intact…)

I’m gonna guess that Julius Thomas finishes in top 5 TE this year.
*HIT*  Even with missing 2 games due to injury…Thomas ended at 201 points for the season…good enough to land right in the middle of the predicted pack as the 3rd best Tight End behind Jimmy “I’m a Wide Receiver” Graham and Tony “Going Out On a High Note” Gonzalez…

Best qb is p man
*HIT*  Peyton Manning had the best outing of his Career ending at 448 points on the year…a full 75 points (4.7 PPG) better than the 2nd best Quarterback in Brees…and 164 points (10.3 PPG) better than the Worst Starter (QB#12) in Stafford…

Best rb- Doug martin
*MISS*  And probably sank your own battleship…In his 6 starts before being lost to injury…Martin never cracked the Top 12 Running Backs in any week…but did manage to be one of the Top 60 position players in 4 of those outings…Ultimately he ended at 65 points and was the biggest Bust of the 1st Round…

Best wr – dez
*MISS*  Dez Bryant finished with 265 points on the season…only good enough for 9th place in the reception happy TBFL…Calvin Johnson battled it out with Josh Gordon…the player he was traded for…and ultimately held the top spot in Back-2-Back seasons by just 3 points at 296…

Best team – johns canes/rnt
*HIT*  As stated above…Hurricanes finished 11-2 for the best record…The first team to post 2-Digit wins in 3 separate seasons…I’m sure a 5-Time-TBFL-Champion might have different criteria for “Best Team”…but I’ll give Justin his Dew…Runs N Throses did not finish 2nd if that is what the slash-indication meant…

Worst team pgl/x factor
*HIT*  Again…I don’t know how the slash works… but while Danny was not the Worst Team…just ending a Moreno yard away from the Playoffs right on the .500 line at 6-6-1…X-Factor did finish as the 2nd Worst Team…a polar opposite of Hurricanes ending at 2-11…

I also believe a couple of rookies will step up and be top 25 wr.
  *MISS*

cou·ple

/ˈkəpəl/

noun  two individuals of the same sort considered together.

Literally…by definition…this is a miss as Keenan Allen was the sole rookie Wide Receiver to step up…ending at #21 with 202 points…

Mike Riley will never learn that it does not pay to start qb rb n wr from the same team.
*MISS*  At least I think so anyway…Warriors started all 3 Redskins together 4 times…going 1-3 in those games…In Week 5 the Redskins were on a Bye…and Riley suffered another loss with all those starters on the bench ending on 78 points…his lowest score of the entire season…Week 7 ended in a Win with Morris benched…and he traded Morris away in Week 8…Lesson learned…

4-4 for Justin…good job…just shy of a 6-Pack…

So who else will throw out some predictions for 2014?
