Statistically Speaking – The Matrix Reloaded Edition

Statistically Speaking

In which I use my inner Neo to examine the code behind The Matrix and twist it to my whim…

“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.”
Morpheus

This post was spawned by Millers whinin…err…correctly identifying…that his team seemed to have an unusually small number of Home Games based on the Schedule Matrix for the 2017 Season…

When the Matrix was created…The Architect was mostly concerned with making sure every team played every other…but it was never really examined on a Home vs Away basis…since The Oracle did not anticipate us using Home Games for any real scoring purpose in the Regular Season…

In the Divisional Matchups of Weeks 3, 6, 9, 11, 12, and 13 (yes we use Oxford commas here…) each team already hosted each of the others 1 time for an even split of 3 Home Games to each team…

With the other 8 possible combinations of weeks…we toss out the top teams being hosted by the bottom teams…

Which means the Bottom-2 teams in each Division should only get 3 Home Games in the remaining 7 Weeks while the Top-2 teams in each Division should be rewarded with a 4th Home Game in those weeks…

For the A and B Divisions this just happened to work out correctly…

But for the C Division…A glitch suddenly presented in The Matrix…

That gives 5 Home games to the Bottom-2 teams and only 2 for the Top-2 teams…and 0 Teams in the C Division has ever brought it up before now…

“You are the eventuality of an anomaly, which despite my sincerest efforts I have been unable to eliminate from what is otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision.
The Architect

Since I am ‘THE ONE’…it was only a matter of swapping Home Games between similar out of Division opponents to ensure no other schedules go out of balance…

Week 01 Home Games for A4 and A3 were swapped to C1 and C2…and in return they both received Week 08 Home Games from C3 and C4…

Week 08 Home Games for B1 and B2 were swapped to C1 and C2…and in return they both received Week 02 Home Games from C3 and C4…

This results in the newly corrected Schedule Matrix below:

Teams that will not play each other:

A1-C4 B1-A4 C1-B4 A2-C3 B2-A3 C2-B3

Complete Regular Season Schedule:

Week 01 – A1-B1 A2-B2 A4-C1 A3-C2 B3-C3 B4-C4
Week 02 – C2-A1 C1-A2 C3-B1 C4-B2 A3-B4 A4-B3
Week 03 – A1-A4 A2-A3 B1-B4 B2-B3 C1-C4 C2-C3
Week 04 – A1-B2 A2-B1 C1-A3 C2-A4 B3-C4 B4-C3
Week 05 – A1-B4 A2-B3 B1-C1 B2-C2 C4-A3 C3-A4
Week 06 – A3-A1 A4-A2 B3-B1 B4-B2 C3-C1 C4-C2
Week 07 – C1-A1 C2-A2 B1-C4 B2-C3 A3-B3 A4-B4
Week 08 – B3-A1 B4-A2 B1-C2 B2-C1 C3-A3 C4-A4
Week 09 – A1-A2 A3-A4 B1-B2 B3-B4 C1-C2 C3-C4
Week 10 – C3-A1 C4-A2 A3-B1 A4-B2 B3-C1 B4-C2
Week 11 – A4-A1 A3-A2 B4-B1 B3-B2 C4-C1 C3-C2
Week 12 – A1-A3 A2-A4 B1-B3 B2-B4 C1-C3 C2-C4
Week 13 – A2-A1 A4-A3 B2-B1 B4-B3 C2-C1 C4-C3

All Top Division finishers from the previous year now have 7 Home Games while all the Bottom Division finishers from the previous year will have 6 Home Games…but the opponents for each week still remain unchanged…

I have Reloaded the current schedules to the updated Schedule Matrix…and corrected the glitch in the 2017 Rulebook as well…
